The Greene County boys basketball team nearly pulled out a victory over North Polk Tuesday, leading until the fourth quarter when the Comets went ahead and grabbed the win 71-68.
The Rams defeated Saydel 54-43 on Friday, ending the regular season 5-16.
The Greene County Rams will meet the Glenwood Rams on Monday, Feb. 24, at 6:30 pm in Glenwood in the first round of Class 3A substate tournament action.
N Polk 71 ~ Rams 68
Greene County had no defensive answer to the Comets’ one-man show, Jevin Sullivan. The sophomore scored 49 points, making eight treys, eight two-pointers and 9 out of 10 free throws.
The Rams trailed by only one point, 16-17, at the end of the first period. They outscored the Comets in the second to go up 38-33 at halftime. They increased their lead to 53-46 in the third, but NP rallied in the fourth to win 71-68.
Carter Morton also had a big night, leading the Rams with 33 points, including seven three-pointers, and seven rebounds. Bryce Stalder added 15 points.
North Polk won the game at the freethrow line, making 13 of 16 while the Rams made five of six. GC hit 12 two-point goals and 13 three-pointers. The Comets made 14 field goals with 10 behind the arc. NP won the battle on the boards 30-24.
Rams 54 ~ Saydel 43
Saydel took the first period lead 11-7, but Greene County bounced back to tie the game at 19 at halftime. The Rams scored 16 points in the third quarter while holding the Eagles to six for a 10-point advantage 35-25, going on to win 54-43.
Morton was the Rams’ leading scorer and rebounder with 23 points, including 11 of 11 free throws and 17 caroms. Bryce Stalder added 12 points and five assists while freshman Jesse Miller came off the bench to score nine points.
The Rams made 15 of 54 field goals, including seven of 35 three-pointers. They took advantage of free throw opportunities, making 17 of19. GC outrebounded the Eagles 38-29.
For a team that’s 1-20 on the season, Saydel had an unbelievable offensive display. They made 17 of17 field goals, including 4 of4 from the arc. They just didn’t have as many opportunities to score. They made just five of 15 at the charity stripe.
